The swimming pool at Thalassotherapia Crikvenica offers excellent conditions for hydrotherapeutic treatments. Sea-water, which is supplied by modern technology from the cove of crystal clear sea in front of the very Thalassotherapia, heated to the ideal temperature of 32 to 33 °C (90 to 92°F), enables enjoying in benefits and healing qualities of Adriatic sea throughout the year. New technologies used in treating sea water enable continuous filtering and everyday partial replenishment of the pool with new, fresh sea water, with automatic regulation of warmth of the sea, as well as regulation of pH-values and chlorine. Almost all the chlorine needed for sea water disinfection is provided by electrolytic effect from the sea.

The dimensions of the pool, 11,40 x 7,40 meters, 0,68 to 1,55 meters in depth, are adapted to therapeutic procedures with patients. These procedures are done under expert supervision of physiotherapist.

HYDROTHERAPY IN THALASSOTHERAPIA CRIKVENICA

The irreplaceable element in healing and recreation of patients of Thalassotherapia Crikvenica represents hydrotherapy. Hydrotherapy (Greek hidor – water, therapeia – healing) is a term which denotes the use of water in healing purposes. From ancient times, the therapeutic impacts of sea-water baths are well known, and, united with notions of modern medical science, they give optimal results in improving psychophysical health. In submersive hydrotherapy, in other words, by immersing patient's body, or any of its parts into the water, the unique physical and thermal characteristics of water are used. Effect of hydrotherapeutic procedures is suitable for respiratory, nervous and locomotor system. The psychological impacts are still not substantially tested, but after physical improvements caused by water as therapeutic medium, psychological problems are alleviated and/or solved, in other words, psychophysical relaxation is achieved.

Hydrotherapy in Thalassotherapia Crikvenica is performed in the swimming pool, which creates ideal conditions for different medical programs, in cases of:
a) medical conditions of locomotor system – diseases of bones and joints, spine diseases, inflammatory and metabolic rheumatism in chronic stage, degenerative and non-joint rheumatism, injuries in subacute and chronic stage, athletic injuries, conditions after endoprothesis implementation, joint contractions;
b) neuromuscular diseases;
c) allergic and other diseases of upper and lower respiratory tract – swimming and exercises in water enlarge the depth of breathing, improve the lung capacity, accelerate circulation and heart activity, provoke enlargement of respiratory tract and strengthening of respiratory muscles. The air at the swimming pool is warm and humid, and therefore reduces the possibility of provoking bronchospasm;
d) laryngectomized patients – in Croatia, the physical rehabilitation of laryngectomized persons in the pool is done only in Thalassotherapia Crikvenica. The goal of therapy is achieving relaxation, improving mobility and enlargement of muscular strength, which contributes to the improvement of function of respiratory muscles and helps protecting lung functions. It is performed with the use of special expedients (canula), in order to prevent water from entering the lungs through the opening in the throat (tracheostoma). Also, the swimming school is organized for laryngectomized persons, in which they, under the expert supervision of licensed instructor, learn using special expedients inside the pool and swimming techniques which they can use even after leaving the special institution for medical rehabilitation.

The therapy is done under the supervision of physiotherapist, and it is prescribed and controlled by physiatrist, pediatrician, allergologist, pulmonologist and otorhinolaryngologist. Hydrotherapeutic procedures are done individually and in groups of 15 persons.
